Description / Rates

Situated in Totara North, Cottage In the Sea rests on the shores of the Whangaroa Harbour, made globally famous by the author and fisherman Zane Gray. Novelist of 90 books, such as Riders of the Purple Sage and The Lone Star Ranger, it was his book, Anglers El Dorado which was all about Whangaroa and deep sea fishing.

Our Cottage In the Sea was originally the Totara North Timber store and overtime became the General store to supply the growing community. In 2022 it will celebrate 100 years of age. Today it is family owned and restored, but keeps the unique features of a public information window and postal service box which maintain the history it holds.

There are two bedrooms in the Cottage, both with unique walls containing empty window shaped frames, looking onto the central living area. Please note - the openings have no glass or curtains meaning the bedroom spaces are unable to be private from the living area, but offering plenty of light into the shared space.  The 1st bedroom in the Cottage contains one Double bed. The 2nd bedroom has one Single bed, and a small 160cm child bed.

Totara North is a quiet and idyllic place, off the highway, a home of fisherman and ample fish to catch. Boasting an excellent boat ramp, large harbour with sheltered coves and estuary, this is an ideal setting for recreational fishing, or just resting and relaxing.

Fish off the deck at low tide, when the water comes within a couple of metres from the deck. At high tide, put your feet up and drop a line as the water goes right up to the building beneath the deck, and you feel like you are sitting in a Cottage In the Sea.

Please note: Linen is not provided you will need to bring your own.

Cleaning fee of $125 for all stays.
